…In his article “Reform ignores disabilities” Mike Ervin points out that this population has not yet even been invited to the table to participate in the discussion (Newsobserver.com, 9.19.09). Adults have to impoverish themselves even to qualify for Medicaid. And children with disabilities must first prove that they qualify for an exemption to get Medicare. Long-term care must be considered for those millions of Americans – adults and children – who desperately and currently need services. Ervin demands Medicaid reform – especially “If you or a loved one is disabled, you should pressure Obama and Congress to address the concerns of the disabled – not neglect them”. I would add that we address Medicaid reform for our children as well. And make no mistake – these are “our” children and families and adults, even if they aren’t relatives. The quality of their lives and our responsibility to help improve their service and support them, is part of our larger responsibility to our community, our state, and our country. My right to say this comes from living with and caring for a loved one with multiple disabilities – and my larger responsibility as a citizen of our world. Lend your voice to theirs, especially if they have trouble making themselves heard.
