…our daughter has a terrifyingly succinct way of getting to the heart of the matter at hand. Recently, we were at the sea’s edge, staring out at the greying sky and waves at the start of the East Coast hurricane season, when she came out with this statement. What else could we do except enjoy the moment…until we were either told to leave the island or continue our vacation? The waves were awesome, the wind was strong, the scene was lovely, and the company exceptional.

In Sandplay™, being present to our clients as therapists means bringing all of ourselves – our capacity for listening, for hope, for adaptability – to bear witness to our clients’ life stories and journeying. The late Dr. Kawaii, an excellent practitioner of this ability to be in the moment, used to say: “Do nothing. Well.” As I interpret his statement, he was able to find a way to articulate that in this place, in this time, it is vital to hold the space in being with this person to the best of my ability.

What amazing journeys life brings us…so many choices, so many paths…and when I pay attention and am mindful of what the moment brings, how excellent is that moment. This is the time of the Jewish New Year, of the start of the new season, new opportunities.

Wishing you the best of what this season and this moment offers…
