It is said, in the Jewish tradition, that it is our obligation to do right by others through the practice of Tikkun Olam, in repairing our small corner of the world. Each day, we can bring a smile to our heart and someone else’s, by making a gesture of goodwill. It is counted as a bonus if we do this unobserved. The highest order of compassion and giving to others is done anonymously.
Imagine how someone might feel if you dropped off a plant or some flowers to the first person who walked by the assisted living center entrance nearby your offiice…or if you sent that card to a friend who was ill instead of just thinking about it…
Now imagine yourself donating one hour of time a week to your nearest homeless shelter or to the Interact women and children’s center…or to the ASPCA…Where can you share your gifts and expertise? I wonder how wonderful you will feel when you do something for someone else outside of your own sphere?
It comes down to…How much time can you share – not spare – and how can you give of yourself to others?
